Marie Pullen Blogger and Business Owner!

Hello!

I am a blogger with Backroad Bluegrass, event coordinator, social media manager, artist, and creator of the Bluegrass Creative Market.

Starting a blog tapped me on the shoulder for several years (wish I would have answered the call sooner). I had a goal of not only encouraging tourism to Kentucky, but even more so, inspiring Kentuckians to explore their own backyard. The more small towns I visited, the more local business owners I met which inspired me to advocate. I’ve been an event coordinator for many years and put my experience to work coordinating influencer events that help to market small towns and businesses as well as the Bluegrass Creative Market which offers a venue for local makers to sell their artwork and products.

Q: How long have you lived/worked in Lexington?

I was born and raised in Lexington. I lived here most of my life, with the exception of several years in Alabama, which elevated my pride in my home state of Kentucky.

Q: What led you to your current career and why do you love it?

I gained a passion for small towns and local businesses over time and wanted to share my love for them through my blog and creating influencer events to help promote them. As an artist myself, I’ve participated in makers markets as a vendor. Now I’m on the flip side coordinating the Bluegrass Creative Market giving artists an opportunity to show and sell their goods. It gives me a thrill anytime someone tells them that they were inspired by my blog to visit a town or when someone posts their haul of locally made goods from the maker’s market.

Q: What would you like for people to know about your job/business?

I would just love for people to be inspired by my blog, events, and market to explore their own backyard in Kentucky and to support small, local businesses.

Q: What or who has been your biggest inspiration?

I’ve been totally expired by how small business owners have pivoted during covid and got really creative with their businesses.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Lexington and what is your go-to item on the menu?

I can’t pick just one! Favorite cocktail- Prickly Pear Margarita from Corto Lima. Elvis Pancakes from Minton’s 360. Sushi at School. Capresi Gnocchi at Pasta Garage. Pistachio Cake from Martine’s Pastries. Gelato from Sorella!

Q: If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I’ve been blessed with some great travel opportunities in my life but I would still love to go to New Zealand. From what I have heard and seen, it looks fabulous! .. and I just want to see the water run down the drain backward!

Q: What is your favorite thing about Lexington?

I love how Lexington is full of music, art, dining, horse farms, wineries, and distilleries. It’s big enough to offer diverse activities but small enough to not have some of the drawbacks of really big cities.

Q: Where do you take friends and family from out of town when they visit?

I often send friends a few blog links to nearby small towns in advance of their travel so they can decide what they would like to see. We’ve gone to Maysville, Georgetown, Paris, Cynthiana, Frankfort, Versailles, Midway…

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

Living in a loving Lexington even more and happily managing businesses that benefit others.

Q: If you could have lunch with any living person, who would it be?

Mia D’Angelo or Dolly Parton

Q: Where can we find you on your day off?

Discovering a new small town, on a scavenger hunt for new murals, or finding a comfy hammock.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

Get married!

Q: What is something that most people don’t know about you?

Q: What do you feel is an essential part of your daily or weekly routine that contributes to your overall well-being?
