Marie McLamb owner of Bluegrass Collaborative!

Hello! My name is Marie McLamb and I am the owner of Bluegrass Collaborative which is home to the Backroad Bluegrass Blog and the Bluegrass Creative Market.

My blog highlights great things to see, do, taste and discover all around Kentucky focusing on locally owned businesses and small towns- www.BackroadBluegrass.com I am getting ready to celebrate my 5-year blogging anniversary in June 2002!

I launched the Bluegrass Creative Market in June 2020 which is a quarterly pop-up market located inside and outside of Oleika Shriners on Southland Drive. It is a festival-style Kentucky makers market with 50+ vendors and growing.

Q: How long have you lived/worked in Lexington?

Born & raised here but spent several years working in Alabama.

Q: What led you to your current career and why do you love it?

I just love living in Kentucky with all the unique and wonderful things it has to offer. Over the years I have developed a love and appreciation for locally owned businesses, artists and small Kentucky towns. I managed to create a living doing what I love by writing about, marketing and creating events that promote Kentucky.

Q: What would you like for people to know about your job/business?

My BackroadBluegrass.com blog was specifically designed to inspire Kentuckians to explore their own backyard, discover new towns and shop local.

Q: What or who has been your biggest inspiration?

I’ve always been inspired by creative entrepreneurs who have the courage to open their own small businesses. Especially with covid, I have been amazed at their resilience and ability to pivot to sustain and continue to succeed.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Lexington and what is your go to item on the menu?

Very hard question to answer but I have to say that Mintons 760 never disappoints. Chef Ashley has this little gem on the northside of town and creates to many awesome dishes in a small space. The Elvis Pancakes just might change your life!

Q: If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I would love to travel to New Zealand, it looks magical.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Lexington?

I love that its not too big and not too small. We enjoy art, beauty, culture, shopping and great food choices without being in the “big city”. And the scenic drives are to die for!

Q: Where do you take friends and family from out of town when they visit?

Of course we explore Lexington, especially downtown. I also enjoy taking them to small surrounding towns such as Frankfort, Cynthiana, Georgtown, Midway and Versailles.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

Where ever life takes me.

Q: If you could have lunch with any living person, who would it be?

Ellen Degeneres

Q: Where can we find you on your day off?

Probably hiking.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

To write for/partner with Kentucky Tourism.

Q: What is something that most people don’t know about you?

Hmmm, I did a 1,000-mile cycling tour through Europe in my teens and I used to be very shy!

Q: What is a topic you wish you knew more about?

Kentucky history

Q: What is your favorite movie or TV show & what are you currently binge watching?

Just started Julia on HBO, I love cooking shows and this is a nice, lighthearted and makes me want to watch her old shows. I can also seemingly never get enough of Seinfeld reruns!

Q: What do you feel that is an essential part of your daily or weekly routine that contributes to your overall well-being?

I have so much passion for what I do which makes my work very joyful! I can’t think of anything else I’d rather be doing. Even if I won the lottery, I would still want to do what I’m doing…. Just maybe occasionally remotely from Italy!

Q: If you were cast in a movie, who would your co-star be?

Jennifer Lawrence maybe. Gotta go with a Kentucky girl!

Q: Who is your go to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to?

I’m a Parrot Head, Jimmy Buffet has never let me down.

Q: If you could give advice to any group of people, what would it be?

Be authentic, don’t second guess your potential and worry about what other people think some other day.
